Should a new high school not be built, the current school would still have to go under extensive repair and renovation that itself would cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Much of the current foundation and infrastructure are old, outdated, and past their useful lifespan.
Additionally, if the building project is not approved on December 8th, Lexington loses access to $120 million of MSBA funding for a new school, and would either have to re-enter a multi-year process for new funding or shoulder almost all the costs of renovation/repair/new construction alone. With the necessity of a new school almost undeniable, it is preferable to go about that process with as much subsidized funding as possible.
